Steel Grooves is the alter ego of Rex Bruton. Rex began playing music at the age of 10. Influenced by Grunge, Metal, and Industrial music at a very young age, his first dream was to become a Lead guitarist in a Metal band. He practiced religiously until around the age of 14/15. This is when his obsession with Dance Music began.
After attending his first local party featuring DJ Duke (Power Music/NYC) and Texas legends Rob Vaughn & Red Eye, he instantly became interested in DJing. Since 14/15 year old teens don't have a lot of $, he decided to trade in his guitar equipment for DJ gear. Rex began to experiment with many different genres of dance music before finding what he was looking for. He has played Breaks, Trance, Speed Garage, House at some point early on in his career. It didn't take long to discover his flagship genre. Techno.
"
Techno is often used as an umbrella term to describe all dance music but to those who know, it is a specific genre of electronic dance. Driving 4x4 beats, tight shuffling percussion, swirling synths & efx are combined to create a dark but elegant futuristic ravey vibe designed for large loud dance floors. Techno tends to be more raw and less cheesy than some other dance genres."
Once Techno became his choice of music, Rex practiced intensely and progressed quickly. He landed his first major gig at the Astro Arena in Houston at the age of 16. A venue that could hold about 15.000-20.000 people. After making his debut Rex began to get requests to play at raves/clubs across Texas .
When Rex became confident in his DJ skills, he created a title that simply but accurately describes his sound.
Steel Grooves. Steel = Hard and Smooth.. Grooves = Music intended for a dance floor.
Steel Grooves has made an impression on dance floors all around TX.. Being one of the few elite Techno artists in TX, Steel Grooves is arguably one of the best mixers in TX. This has earned him the privilege to share the stage with many of techno's most influential artists on their visits to Texas . Frankie Bones, Adam Beyer, Headroom, Richie Hawtin, Mike Dearborn, T-1000, Alexi Delano, Andre Morant, Chris Anderson, Misstress Barbara, Christian Smith, DJ Dan, Woody McBride, Bam Bam, Josh Wink to name just a few. As an obsessive record collector, SG has an Impressive collection of dance tunes to select from. Rex has also organized and promoted a few events of his own in Austin over the years.
Inevitably, Raves caught bad attention across the country around early 2001. The attendees were getting younger and the drug usage higher. This would pretty much end Raves in many parts of the states, taking away use of large venues and forcing the music into clubs. Adjusting to the club atmosphere was a real challenge. Underground electronic music is not always a hit in clubs. Smaller sound systems, smaller dance floors and picky patrons make Techno harder to enjoy for some. Gigs became few and far between and House & Trance became more popular.
Looking for other ways besides DJing to quench his thirst for techno, the urge to produce techno of his own struck. Rex took a break from the club scene and began to learn to record & edit wave files and sequence them using Sound Forge & Acid software. He then picked up a couple drum machines and began the learning process of producing electronic sounds. Early on Steel Grooves produced mainly drummy, loopy DJ tools to include into his DJ sets. Writing is just 1/4 the battle in Electronic music. Engineering is the other 1/4 and marketing is the other 1/2.The quest for perfect the beat never ends.
To Rex Techno is a religion. For over a decade now Steel Grooves has proudly pushed techno in Texas . Through the Good Bad & Ugly Steel Grooves will always seek to spread the word of Techno. Creating new fans is a challenging but exciting way of life .Rex's mission as a DJ is to continue to push the boundaries of mixing while staying true to his sound. He could care less about the glamour that some DJs seem to thrive on. He prefers to let the music do the talking.
